LEE WILSON WINS IN BALI AGAIN! 04/05/07

Lee Wilson

Lee Wilson triumphs in epic conditions at the Quiksilver Open Keramas 2007, dominating the final as perfect six foot conditions graced the final day of the Quiksilver Open Keramas 2007 to take home the Rp10,000,000 prize money.

I’m over the moon! Especially after winning two contests in a row... To win a contest like Keramas is amazing. With such a good field of surfers in this event, basically anyone can get through if you get the right wave and I guess I just got lucky and got the right waves.”

Lee Wilson

Lee who calls Keramas one of his favorite waves in Bali, surfed solidly the whole event and eventually won the final with a total score line of 17.63 points leaving Dede Suryana needing a combination of scores to win.

However in typical Bali fashion, competitive drive was sometimes overshadowed by comradery as noted by Dede after the final “I got a set wave that wasn’t that great and as I was paddling back out I just saw Lee sitting there and waiting for the good one and then seeing Lee take that wave and get Barreled in front of me, it was like Yeah! I’m stoked for Lee.”

BOURTON TEAM RIDERS ON A ROLL 24/04/07

The last week in South Africa and Bali, Indonesia, Bourton team riders have won two major events. Muzz must be doing something right...

Cool Hand LUKE

Luke Munro coolly knocked out local favourite Jordy Smith in an inconsistent clean and hollow 3 to 4 ft Durban beach break.

Luke Munro

Coached through 4 heats of that day by Kelly via his cell phone Luke paced himself through tough heats against the likes of Ben Dunn, Dane Reynolds and Roy Powers until he faced the in form Jordy who hit the water frothing from a very vocal beach crowd who were expecting the local boy to blitz his way to victory as he had done in previous heats.

As expected Jordy came out blazing and notched up 6’s and 7’s at will but also handing priority to Munners who used it with the skill and patience of an Olympic poker player. Luke knew that Jordy would be hard to beat if he had the best waves of the final so he made darn sure that he would have them by sitting out nearly 15 minutes of the final without one scoring wave. His wave choice although paramount was not the deciding factor it was more his powerful fluent style and roundhouse attack that impressed the judges more so than time in the air which Jordy was certainly getting. After an ordinary start on both circuits Luke got the confidence booster that he thrives on and is now on his way to Scotland to build on his win.Top

LEE (BARLO) WILSON

Lee Wilson

Rip curl’s Lee Wilson won the Rusty’s Rumble in the Jungle contest held at SanurBeach on April 23.

Lee Wilson

Rumble in the Jungle was the first event on this years Indonesian surfing championship pro tour and Wilson’s win puts him in the number one spot on the ISC ratings.

Surfing his way up to first place Barlo left behind local pros such as Wayan Suyadnya (Gobleg) and Rahtu Suargita in the finals with a massive 360 degree air which secured him victory over local charger Nyoman Sukasta.

Lee who lives half the year in Bali knows the reefs back to front and fresh from Australia with a new quiver of Bourton shapes the kid was frothing.

Congratulations Lee good luck with the rest of the year!

Munners Wins His First WQS 12/06/06

Luke Munro

Luke Munro won his first WQS event today in the Oakley and Air Sri Lanka 4 star event in the Maldives. Better still he didit in left handers and on his backhand, a side of his surfing considered by some as his weakest. He sent me a text just beforehe hit the water for the final thanking me for the board thatgot him to that point. The irony is that that particular board DH (Darren Handley) asked me to design and shape for Mick Fanning; something with a heap of concave he requested. When Mick saw it he said nah, nah it’s a fricken skateboard, referring to the rail line running out the tail. So when Mick side-stepped it Luke grabbed it, perhaps out of pity or maybe the nice red rail spray or whatever.

It sat lost in his garage amongst his other 40 contenders for over 6 months until he decided to take it to the Maldives as a wildcard in the quiver. From the first rail plunge the board went nuts so he surfed right through to the final and won it on the mother of all concaves scoring the highest heat score; two nines on the way! The moral of this story is what I have been saying for quite sometime now in relation to surfboards; one mans trash is another mans treasure.

At this point Munners is winging his way to Brazil full of confidence looking for left handers and sitting pretty 2nd on the WQS ratings.Top
