SKIP FISH TWIN KEEL
Many punters believe that this type of fish is a retro, but I cannot remember this design ever being popular in the past but that is not to say that it did not exist back then. I am more inclined to believe that some of its components have been dug up from the past and some newer ones mixed in.
I guess Skip Frye who I think created this type of fish would be the guy that would know. The first guy to pick up on this design in OZ was Dick Van and he added his own personal signatures digging out deep double concaves and glassing with carbon glass and has a great following in this field.
Since the Skip Fish has been so successful in America and Australia I have included my own version in my Hybrid section, and the feedback has been very encouraging particularly in the small stuff which is really all it’s meant for.
I have kept the rocker very flat with the nose bellied and the centre concaved and the tail deeply veed in an effort to have it run as fast as a short board can but be easy from rail to rail. Although it is only a twin fin and very short it consequently should be super loose but I have seen many interpretations of this design and every one seems to put the keels on too parallel which makes them surf to straight and really only good for soul arching at high speeds.
In fact the keels are a dominating force with this design so by toeing them in a lot more toward the nose they have a much needed shorter arc.
The new FCS keels are a beautifully made fin and fit into a 3 plug set up. The advantage of this 3 plug set up is that if you need to go super loose you can use MR glass twin fins instead and move them forward in the plugs which gives the board less down the line speed and sends her up the face and in and around the pocket.
I have chosen this design to be a finish coated polished board and we are doing one off original 70’s style yuck out glass jobs, of which do add a little weight but are very strong on the deck and when they have gained momentum are hard to stop. For those who want them lighter it’s only a matter of customizing.
