Model: Cruiser

The Pipedream Cruiser is basically an updated mini mal designed by Murray Bourton to give those attracted to this type of board a little more bang for their buck. The market for this type of board is crowded with Asian pop outs, French biro companies and you name it all with new fandangle moulding techniques that enables them to mass produce for in their eyes an undiscerning customer. Even if that may be Murray has put considerable thought into making sure that the Cruiser has the right specs to satisfy all demands that may be placed on it ,not just some !

PLANSHAPE

The planshape has a well balanced nose to tail ratio so as to make the board easy to paddle and anti pearl( narrow noses nose dive easily)but not to the point where it is impossible to duck dive or too front heavy to throw around.

ROCKER

The traditional mal is designed to nose ride and is very flat under the nose making it very susceptible to nose diving on take off particularly for learners so Murray has made sure that the nose lift is a smart compromise between the two extremes so as to make the entry user friendly to both novice and experienced surfer. The tail lift has considerable curve since it has a very limited effect on paddle but if designed right greatly enhances manoeuvrability so those experienced can throw it around and those quick learners can learn even quicker coz the board simply wants to turn.

BOTTOM SHAPE

Modern short board concaves may make a board lift and go fast but are not easy to surf when the board is widish. The shear amount of foam in the cruiser will do what a concave is meant to do so Murray has employed a subtle rolled vee to help the board from rail to rail. The bottom shape in fact the main theme of all aspects of the cruiser is useability to all shades of talent and the rolled vee has the best results. The rails are medium soft for the same reason and the deck roll disguises much of the thickness on the stringer.

GLASSING AND FINS

The Cruiser employs the FCS fin system which enables one to fire up or dumb down the design again giving it a variety of applications for learners or experienced alike. Perhaps the most rewarding for the customer is the glass job on the cruiser. The value add is that it has the same sanded finish glass job as all the high end base labels but at a much cheaper price. The sanded finish requires a very skilled glassing team where imperfections are not tolerated and if one is to compare the Cruiser to an Asian pop out; its apples and oranges! The polyester glass job and polyurethane blank is still by far the most sort after feel in a surfboards performance and even though many learners will be attracted to this model on price there will be silent benefits only realized in the cruiser once its surfed.
